Working Group Meetings | Conference Overview (191 KB, 1 pp)

The 2013 I2SL Annual Conference included several working group meetings. These informal side meetings provide an opportunity for I2SL and select members of the I2SL Community to identify or initiate specific activities associated with promoting the goals of I2SL.

Laboratory Continuous Performance Improvement Program (LCPIP) Meeting
Monday, September 23, 2013
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This was a full-day meeting to continue formulating a continuous performance improvement program for laboratories, an initiative that is being co-chaired by the University of Minnesota and I2SL.

The morning session included presentations and discussions addressing strategies to change user behaviors in the lab and purchasing practices for laboratory equipment. The afternoon session included presentations and discussions addressing facility operations, facility metrics, metering, sub-metering, and existing standards and building evaluation strategies that, together with user cooperation, will lead to the continued improvement of the facility's sustainability.

Both morning and afternoon sessions concluded with a panel discussion intended to solicit ideas and comments on what to include in the LCPIP and options of implementation.

High-Technology Operations and Maintenance Certification Working Group
Monday, September 23, 2013
8 a.m. to Noon

Laney College, in partnership with I2SL and the IFMA Research and Development Council, is identifying areas of knowledge, skills, and attitudes for building technicians that are essential to sustaining the designed and engineered performance of high-technology facilities. Laney and I2SL captured input from industry professionals regarding a proposed training and certification program for high-tech facility managers. Working Group members who attended this session learned the results of this survey and contributed to a discussion of the gaps in current training opportunities and I2SL's plan for a nationwide curriculum for current operations, maintenance, and management professionals as well as two- or four-year college students.

Show Owners the Money
A meeting with ESCOs and UESCOs to discuss increasing the third party financing of capital improvement in laboratory building systems and scientific/process equipment
Monday, September 23, 2013
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

I2SL, the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), and  energy services companies (ESCOs) and utility energy service companies (UESCOs) discussed development of a program to increase energy efficiency in government and other public laboratories, data centers, and related high-technology facilities through energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs). Several successful ESPC projects were presented and discussed. Meeting attendees also discussed a proposed strategy to build awareness and confidence in third party financing, define the value propositions of ESPCs for owners, training laboratory personnel and the project team on ESPCs, and define partnerships that lead to the successful undertaking of these projects.
