I²SL is proud to sponsor the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21) workshops. As co-sponsor, I²SL is working with various organizations to host courses in 2010.

New! The Labs21 Introductory Course: High Performance, Low-Energy Design and the Labs21 Workshop: Environmental Performance Criteria (EPC) are now approved by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for Green Building Certification Institute Continuing Education Hours toward the LEED^® Credential Maintenance Program.

Workshops Available

All workshops are taught by seasoned laboratory designers, energy managers, and facilities professionals. The following are courses that I²SL offers:

• Labs21 Introductory Course: High Performance, Low-Energy Design
  A full-day workshop that introduces strategies for designing and constructing sustainable laboratories in both new and existing facilities.

• Labs21 Workshop: Optimizing Laboratory Ventilation Rates
  Formerly Part I of the Labs21 Advanced Course: Laboratory Ventilation and Design
  This half-day, highly interactive workshop scrutinizes the design challenges of crafting a "balanced" laboratory ventilation system that both handles the "worst" scenario (possible) safely and manages "routine" scenarios (probable) efficiently.

• Labs21 Workshop: Low-Pressure-Drop HVAC Design
  Formerly Part II of the Labs21 Advanced Course: Laboratory Ventilation and Design
  During this half-day workshop attendees will learn various approaches to low-pressure HVAC system design that lower laboratory energy consumption.

• Labs21 Workshop: Laboratory Operations and Maintenance
  A half-day workshop that explains the relationship between how systems are operated and maintained and the overall safety and energy efficiency of a laboratory facility.
• Labs21 Workshop: Environmental Performance Criteria (EPC)
  This half-day workshop covers EPCs, a point-based rating system that assesses the environmental performance of laboratories.
• Labs21 Workshop: Occupants Matter: Sustainable Design Meets Researchers
  This half-day workshop covers collaborative practices to ensure maximum efficiency from electrical and mechanical systems, and the building as a whole.

• ASHRAE/DOE Save Energy Now Data Centers Workshop
  This full-day course focuses on state-of-the-art strategies for how to improve data center energy performance.

• Laboratory Commissioning Workshop
  This half-day workshop provides a robust consideration of commissioning principles, including key targets for laboratory commissioning, a review of system interactions and their relationships to sustainability, performance metrics, scheduling, and associated costs.

• Sustainable Design in K-14 Learning Laboratories
  This half-day workshop addresses issues that relate to energy conservation, sustainability, and education through the integration of laboratory furnishings and systems planning.

• An Introductory Workshop to Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  Explore the benefits of BIM, including saving time, reducing project cost, and receiving a high degree of quality while engaging the owner in the decision process.
